We've been trying to finish off the front of the house outside. First we built a patio from the stones which were buried in the garden. I blogged about it before and you can see photos of it in progress here .

We wanted a path to extend from this and we thought we would simply carry on the terrace in the same way with the stones. We started digging some of the earth away to make space for a large stone. I brushed the earth of to see how big the stone was but it seemed never ending. I got rid of more dirt and realised that this was not just one stone but several. They were all at the same level so it looked man-made. Jokingly I said, 'wouldn't it be funny if there was a path here already!'. We kept clearing and brushing and low and behold, there was a path! 2 days later we have totally uncovered a large area.

The house is 200 years old and looking at the roundness of the stones, it seems quite likely that this path was put there when the house was first built. I'm so excited with our find. I feel like an archeologist! I know it's not very level but I don't care, it looks so beautiful.
I've made a flower bed to the side and planted box hedging. Inside the hedging I'll plant some pale pink roses. Weather permitting, I'll start pointing the stonework very soon. *sigh*
